Are Theatre trips a possiblity for Locking Villagers
Apollo Theatre Bath Theatre Bristol Hippodome
One of my previous mail shots ask would Theatre trips be a possibility for Locking Villagers. First replies are encouraging with matinees being the preferred choice rather than overnight if it were a visit to Bristol Hippodrome or Bath.
Should we go overnight to London then an evening performance has been asked for. What I need to know now is what kind of show would you prefer – Musical, Play, Ice show, Concert, Come Dancing etc, etc.
I should think Theatre visits is certainly a possibility if we could persuade Bakers Dolphin to do a special Pick up/drop off in the village of Locking without a minimum number of people as is now required. That will give us more chance to build up numbers attending without too big an initial outlay to begin with!
Again your input is required on this one.

Highgrove House Tetbury
The application has gone in and at present I am awaiting a reply from Highgrove House with regard to our request to visit Prince Charle’s garden at Tetbury. At present there is a two year waiting list to visit this organic garden so, finger’s crossed, we hope to be accepted soon!
A maximum number of just 25 persons can visit at any one time and there is a set price for such a group which will be around £25 including coach.
I already have some reply’s from people wanting to go, if we are accepted. So the only fair way will be to adopt a first come, first served basis for this trip.
I even had several people wanting to take the other package – afternoon tea at Highgrove costing £70 excluding coach!!
I think for the first time we will stick to the garden tour, if accepted.
If you want to be part of this group let me know otherwise you will certainly miss out.
OLD BANWELL ROAD DUMPING GROUNDS!
Old Banwell Road is a pretty road with Locking Sports Ground on one side and great views across the Valley towards Elborough and Hutton on the other.
For some time now it has also been the dumping ground for fly tippers, and motorists approaching or leaving the village.
It seems that it is beneath them to bin their quick food waste at home.
Rather they would prefer to throw it out of a car window as a kind of sport!
I just think it is a complete ignorance and contempt for their own village!!
I’m fed up of picking quick food cartons up from Old Banwell Road and placing them in my bins, and wonder how many other villagers have commented on the state of Old Banwell Road as they drive up and down it.
The council says they cannot arrange to pick up rubbish such as this but if we can arrange to patrol the road and place the litter in one spot then they will arrange to pick it up.
The council will also provide litter pickers and florescent jackets to make the job easier and safer.
If anyone in the village is interested in helping please get in touch with the newsletter.
I would prefer our litter louts on wheels to take their rubbish home with them... But hey! That’s the easy solution.
ANOTHER BRIDGE TO CROSS!
A heartfelt plea from Banwell’s Holly Quinn for more Bridge players – beginners, intermediates or advanced – to come forward to join her village Bridge club.
I understand we have some Bridge enthusiasts in Locking Villagers – Pauline Dunn, Dorothy Dodsworth, Trish Fleming etc, to name some.
So if you are interested in Bridge and would like to play – or even learn – please contact Holly on 01934 820943.
Who knows, a Locking Bridge club could be the result!

SOUND OF MUSIC
A taste of the theatre comes to Locking Villagers on the 1st December 2010 when they get the chance to see “The Sound of Music” at the Bristol Hippodrome.
This lavish and critically acclaimed production tells the true story of the Von Trapp families, flight across the mountains and works its magic once again for young and old alike. With its unforgettable score “The Sound of Music” touches the hearts of all ages and brims over with some of the most memorable songs ever performed on the musical stage including “My favourite things”, “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb every mountain", "The lonely Goatherd”,”Sixteen going on seventeen”, and of course the glorious title song “The Sound of Music”.
Connie Fisher is Maria and starring alongside Connie are two of the UK’s favourite stage performers, Michael Praed as Captain Von Trapp and Marilyn Hill Smith as Mother Abbess.
A lunchtime start from Manor Stores, Locking for this matinee performance.
Cost is £27 which includes the Bakers Dolphin Coach and theatre tickets
SUNDAY 9 JANUARY 2011
MAMMA MIA
AT WALES MILLENNIUM CENTRE, CARDIFF BAY
One of the most successful of all musicals “Mamma Mia” inspired by 22 of ABBA’s greatest hits, is a musical that tells the story of a mother and daughter, the night before the daughter’s wedding.
Caroline Johnson’s sunny funny story of love, laughter, and friendship has been enlightening audiences around the world for over 10 years.
The magic of ABBA’s timeless songs is sure to get your feet tapping throughout the performance.
This musical is set on a Greek Island Paradise.
Pick up will be around midday from Manor Stores.
Cost is £59.50 which includes coach, entry into Wales and theatre ticket. (The Welsh bit is a joke!)
What a way to start the New Year!
SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB
I have been asked by several villagers whether it would be possible to start another Senior Citizens Club, to be run either in the Village Hall or Church Centre.
The answer to that is that it is entirely up to yourselves.
Have we enough people interested to form a committee, do we run it in the afternoons, would Bingo, Whist, Bridge, quizzes be on the agenda, alongside a cup of tea/coffee etc....???
We could hold swap shops – cakes, plants – anything in fact – or just catch up with friends and the local gossip!
Would anybody be willing to provide cakes for refreshments, raffle prizes, help on these days.!
Do we charge a fee to join in order to pay for the hall etc.
We could run a Christmas party, have an auction afternoon etc.
I now need to know how many villagers would be interested in helping as soon as possible. Once that is known, I’m quite happy to open up my house for a meeting in order to discuss further.
2011 DESTINATIONS –YOUR RESPONSE
The voting panel have deliberated your response to my questionnaire on destinations to visit in 2011, with the following results.
Most requested day trip destinations was Chatsworth House, closely followed by Kennet and Avon Canal.
Joint ‘third’ in the poll were the New Forest Tour and Otter Park, Thomas Hardy Country Tour, Warwick Castle or Stratford-On-Avon.
One of the few destinations to get ‘Nil points’ was Abbey Gardens, Malmesbury – probably because I mentioned the “Naked Gardeners”!! Strange result that, because the gardens are superb.!
London Theatre trips topped the overnight list, closely followed by the Isle of Wight Tour.
Two night/Three day trips proved a runaway victory for the Lake District., who polled 4 times as many votes as the nearest rivals.
33 of you bothered to return the questionnaire out of over 150 sent out.
I do expect the response to be better than that – don’t you!!
I am now working on the results for next years trips!
WE HAVE NOW ADDED STRATFORD-ON-AVON TO OUR ALTHORPE TRIP!
Our Althorpe trip on Sunday 11 July 2010 is now a 2 stop outing with Stratford-Upon-Avon added to give Villagers a real choice of destinations.
Stratford-Upon-Avon needs no introduction to our villagers and is always a popular venue.
Time there should be around 5 hours with our coach arriving at around 10.30hrs.
All can stretch their legs for ¾ hour before Althorpe bound villagers resume their journey.
We should be back at Stratford at around 17.30hrs to pick up again.
Then it is on to home arriving at around 20.00hrs.
The Althorpe trip was least popular of all our outings this year and I hate cancelling for any reason.
An additional destination like Stratford should give us the extra passengers to make the trip viable.
COST TO ALTHORPE IS £31 WHICH INCLUDES ENTRY
COST TO STRATFORD IS £15.50
To book your place please contact Brian Ashton on:

The whole idea of these trips is to allow Locking Villagers great days out at a reasonble cost to meet with their friends from Banwell, Elborough and Hutton.
